Tropical Storm Debby hit the Carolinas hard, with severe flooding expected across southeast North Carolina and eastern South Carolina on Thursday and Friday. After making its second landfall just north of Charleston, Debby is now slowly moving over the Carolinas, bringing heavy rain to North Carolina, South Carolina, and the East Coast. The National Weather Service warned of a major flooding threat, particularly in North Carolina and Virginia.
In North Carolina, a tornado was reported east of Raleigh, causing significant damage to at least 10 homes in Wilson County, as reported by WRAL TV news. Flooding also forced the closure of Interstate 95 near Fayetteville. Meanwhile, in South Carolina, residents near Debby’s second landfall site were dealing with several inches of water in their homes. In Georgia, authorities reported that four dams were breached northwest of Savannah in Bulloch County, though thankfully, no deaths were reported.
In Florida, where Debby first made landfall early Monday as a Category 1 hurricane, the state’s Chief Financial Officer, Jimmy Patronis, issued an emergency order on Wednesday. This order extends the time property owners have to cancel a contract with public claims adjusters from 10 days to 30 days. The order also mandates that public adjusters must respond to policyholders within 7 days and that all adjusters must properly identify themselves before signing any contract.
Patronis, who has frequently criticized the influx of public adjusters after storms, emphasized the importance of protecting Floridians from dishonest contractors and claims representatives. “After any disaster, shady contractors and so-called claims reps will try to take advantage of the situation and come between you and your insurance policy,” Patronis said. “These bad actors often tarnish the reputation of legitimate adjusters and contractors and are only looking to make a quick buck off vulnerable Floridians. It’s truly disgraceful.”
